The effect of spiritual training on pre-operative anxiety in patients' undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery in Lavasani hospital of Tehran, Iran 2011: a random assigned clinical trial
Objective: To determine the effect of spiritual/religious training intervention on anxiety of individuals scheduled for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery. Inclusion criteria include: candidate for coronary artery bypass graft surgery, Muslim Shia, age between 45-75 years old, first time hospitalized for coronary surgery, without diagnosed mental disorder. Study population include all of coronary artery bypass graft’s candidates that hospitalised in Tehran’s Shahid Lavasani hospital for April to July 2011. Participants were 66 patients with ischemic heart disease who selected from study population based on inclusion criteria and randomly allocated in two control and intervention groups. Interventions consisted of five sessions of Spiritual-religious training based on Richards and Bergin’s technique in five days. Each session continued for 45 to 60 minutes. Anxiety measured before, and 2 hours after intervention before surgery. Rate of anxiety compared before and after intervention in intervention and control groups.

Patients were confirmed to surgery and recorded in their case by Angiography; the first time hospitalization for cronary surgery; having ability to communication and interview; ability to tolerate the interventions; acceptance to be as a research participants; aged between 45 to 75 years old; Moslem, Shiites; Literacy to read and write in Persian; Ability to talking with Persian language;
Exclusion criteria:
Patients who had medical background of depression, chronic anxiety or schizophrenia; patients who didn’t complete their questionnaires;

Description
Intervention group:
The intervention was included of five sessions of spiritual-religious group therapy with emphasis on the Richards and Bergin’s spiritual therapy technique and based on Islamic Zikrs (holy Quran and Hadith with positive approach), and meditation. Each session including 5-7 people and lasted from 45 min to one hour in average of five days.
